Second of the 'Once in a blue moon' series, this is the story of the 1st ever roadtrip Sailee and me took, to Ganapatipule, a gorgeous little coastal town.
Meticulously planning for days, we set off early that morning, music and maps in place.
All smooth sailing, 3hours in, the maps lady said, 'Faster route available'.
"Yayy, shortcut? Great!"
45mins later though, all alone for miles, on a bumpy off route mountain pass, I found myself praying, 'please, nothing go wrong now'. Almost on cue, the phone lost network and maps switched off.
It's easy to panic when in company, but alone, you realize the only choice really is to be calm. How we found our way back to the highway and the sheer joy of it, is a story for another time.
The highlight of the drive, the head spinning Kashedi pass made my heart race with every twist and turn. By the end of that stretch though, I had conquered my fear of driving through treacherous mountain passes forever.
Almost sunset now, still far from destination, desperate to reach before dark, I took a gamble on the maps 'faster route' again. I could have sworn Sailee rolled her eyes at me. Predictably, the little village dirt road we were on now, turned into a dead end like uphill of red mud. Feeling defeated, following maps blindly, I revved up the engine, drove over, and what do you know, like magic, maps showed, 8 mins to destination. Exhausted beyond belief, sighing in relief, as I took that turn onto Arey Warey road, suddenly, out of nowhere, a huge beautiful golden setting sun and the ocean, in all its magnificence, loomed before me and literally took my breath away. In that one sublime, surreal moment, everything else just melted away. We had made it home!
In the last 10 hours I had felt nervous, excited, scared, lost, angry, irritated, foolish, in despair, frustrated, defeated, relieved, in control, victorious, joyous, confident, motivated, energised and exhausted... I had felt life. I had felt alive!
Truly life is a Roadtrip. A road trip is life.
By the artist:-
As an artist, I am a storyteller.
I am drawn to shapes and structure but also the freedom of fluidity. One represents security and organisation and the other unrestricted freedom and flow. I want both, and as a mixed media and collage artist, I have finally found a style that marries them well.
While my educational background comprises English Literature, Psychology and Mass Media, my love affair with art started serendipitously only a little over two years ago, and having explored many different mediums and techniques, I have now found a style that truly resonates with me.
My love for collage is perhaps also influenced by my childhood obsession with jigsaw puzzles. Being a self taught artist and having spent hours and days and years now, trying to teach myself about something I enjoy so much, has taught me that, art is as much about restraint and confidence, as it is about flourish and expression. I yearn to achieve a balance between the two.
My inspiration: My work is greatly influenced by beautiful writing (sometimes even just a single word), and the words or thoughts that inspired the painting, accompany the painting often. My favourite techniques: Monoprinting and collage
My process: I enjoy creating my own collage papers and then combining them with mixed media. Many a times I create the papers and simply tear them up or cut them, and then within those pieces, sometimes ideas and inspiration appear. I then put back those pieces to create the story.
My art philosophy : as Andy Warhol said,” Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.”
