Asit Sarkar graduated the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta in 1988. He was born and brought up in Durgapur, West Bengal and has pursued his love of art since he was a child. His work has been displayed all over India and is one of the notable artists from Bengal. He works with various mediums such as watercolors, acrylics on canvas and charcoal. However, the one medium that he keeps going back to is watercolor. Asit’s landscapes of Benaras, Kurseong, Hoogly river, and Kolkata have mostly been done in watercolor. He keeps experimenting with different surfaces and different techniques.
Upon seeing his portraits, the viewer might assume that Asit wants to project love through his paintings whereas Asit intends to show peace. He believes that the audience is struggling with is grappling with a busy life, pollution, and stress in day-to-day life. Asit wants to give some moments of peace to viewers who look at his paintings. The aim of creating the images of serene Krishna and the beautiful women is to provide relief and a sense of calm to the viewer. Portraits, where the subjects are holding the lotus, are trying to send a message of peace to the audience. In some of his paintings, subjects are shown wearing masks. These symbolize the demands that everyday life makes on human beings because of which humans are forced to project a different persona for the world outside with no time to look within.
Return to the source of peace and tranquility with Asit Sarkar’s paintings.
