Biplab Biswas was born in 1949, in a small village called Behratpur near Kolkata. He pursued his education from Rabindra Bharti University, Kolkata, where he enhanced his art and achieved greater depths of expression.

Biplab draws inspiration from the rich Indian culture and heritage and the simple and caring rural life. He is a very emotional and spiritual person, with a strong belief in a Greater Force. He believes that love is an important fibre that entwines people with each other and with the universe. This is the reason why love is an essential theme throughout his paintings too.

His colour palette majorly comprises of earth tones of yellow, green and blue along with undertones of black and white. He sparingly but beautifully uses rustic hues of red and orange, mostly to highlight a certain dominant object or feature of his subjects. Biplab’s paintings portray human beings in righteous glory and strikes a beautiful balance between nature and people. His art depicts the simplicity of life, away from all malignant and materialist pleasures, hence it is easy to draw similarities with the untainted and wholesome village life.

His fluid brushwork resonates with the ease of life he thinks one can have if they learn to embrace the gift of life and pursue spiritual development. A profound believer of inner reflection, Biplab often paints his human subjects without eyes or with a single eye. He thinks that in order to find peace and true purpose of life, one has to focus on what is inside. His subjects with one eye represent the concentration and focus of an archer, who has to close an eye, to find his aim. Female forms — as creators of life — play an important role in his paintings. They embody beauty and perfection and represent a person’s success and power. Inspired by the common women who have extraordinary resonance, Biplab paints his female subjects, flawless, adorned with jewellery and with radiant figures. Dressed in traditional Indian clothes, Biplab’s subjects, add historical references to his paintings. He dresses these subjects in pagdis or turbans, sarees and dhotis. This ensures that his subjects capture the essence of cultural folklore and encapsulate the retellings of ancient legends.

The artist creates a combination of straight lines and curves, that give his artworks depth and give his subjects, shadows. His unique painting style and colour palette has made his works popular in Indian and international art world. Biplab has displayed his works in numerous shows all across the globe.
