Debabrata Hazra

Debabrata Hazra Paintings - Artist Profile
Born in 1974, Debabrata Hazra’s works have always reflected his strong experience of nature, and nature reveals herself to the artist in very complex forms. Look close and you see muzzy washes, gentle dabs, tremulous stippling and varied strokes. In this new series, the struggle of the process of creating the work is evident in each piece, which reminds us of Post-Impressionist or Expressionist works by masters in the early 20th century. Yet his works are different as they reflect the spirit of the Orient. Interestingly, eminent art critics have compared him with the medieval Persian masters. The artist is excitedly open to myriad possibilities of conception and execution, which is apparent in his works when we see his deceptive casualness in the making of an image. In his paintings, the first wave that hits the spectator is the dazzling show of colours. The rippling compositions are drenched in mauves, yellows, oranges and blues, writhing with greens and ochres, but they seem to accrue a kind of incremental silence which firmly imprints itself on the retinal memory.
