Gautam Mukherjee was born and raised in a three centuries old ancestral home in Kolkata. This house and his family values had a deep impact on the artist, since his childhood and it is often reflected in his paintings.

Gautam’s love for art began developing at a young age, when helped painting and decorating the annual Durga Pooja pandals in his neighborhood. He was fascinated by the “Kalighat Potchitra”, a popular art form in Bengal, which accessorizes the background of the pooja pandal. This took Gautam’s love for art to the next level.

As Gautam grew up, he started observing and appreciating the festivities, decorations, and above all the divine beauty of Maa Durga. He was particularly attracted towards the shape of Her eyes. His subjects have extremely expressive, fish-shaped eyes, a typical characteristic of Bengali people, especially Bengali women. The artist believes that eyes are the most prominent feature in a person, eyes are the windows to a person’s soul. Thus, while painting his stunning artwork, he focuses on the eyes the most. In a way, he breathes life into his canvas by painting very expressive eyes for his subjects.

The artist captures the daily activities of a Bengali family. Along with the human figures, onlookers can also see antique mirrors, doors and windows, old wooden cupboards, vintage telephones, etc. in these paintings. In his own unique way, the artist preserves the culture of the bygone days. Even though they are set in today’s world, Gautam’s paintings have a fascinating history attached to them. His paintings are his expressions of love, affection, and sentiments shared by a family. Similar to how each person has a different relationship and varying levels of affection towards a person in their family, Gautam’s paintings represent something different to everyone. What you take away from the painting, depends on what you deduce from it.

His subjects are simple Bengali people, living their day-to-day life. He captures the simplicity of daily life in vibrant colours. Though the artist does not paint pictures of any particular family, his portraits are relatable to everyone. Gautam explores the love and respect shared by two people, by their physical proximity. He believes that the physical distance between two people says a lot about their emotional connection.
