    Mixed Media on Paper

Sukanta Das was born (1973) and brought up in West Bengal and completed (1996) his Bachelors in Visual Arts from Rabindra Bharti University, Kolkata. He has been a part of numerous solo and group shows. Due to his talent, he has won many accolades, notably, an Honourable Mention (2003) from the Avantika Art Society.

Sukanta draws with mixed media on canvas and is fluent in translating emotions on the canvas. His figures are aesthetic yet inspire the viewer to create stories about the lady. Notice their clothes and the art on them. Inspired by the Mughal miniature, Sukanta draws an interesting portrait as if to relate the figure to a distant past or a story. Now, the viewer begins to notice calligraphy in the background and thinks that the miniatures have been turned on their heads. He as an artist does not seem to be obsessed with the overall message – that he leaves to the audience to extract. However, as an artist, the details do hold his attention, and he renders them beautifully on the canvas. The eyes, smile, and even eyelashes are beautifully sketched.

His art speaks to men and women alike for its sensuousness, its precise portrayal of figures, and in its overall simplicity.
