Tapas Sarkar Paintings - Artist Profile
Born in West Bengal, in 1952, Tapas Sarkar is a well known Indian sculptor. He received his Bachelor's degree from the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata in 1975. He is the founder of Sculpture Gallery, Kolkata, and a founding member and secretary of Calcutta Sculptors.
Tapas’s works are inspired by ancient Indian history and the traditional Kalighat painting of Bengal. He uses a variety of materials as his medium, including glass-wool, terracotta, bronze, aluminum, and scrap. His sculptures celebrate life in all its forms and glory.
Before pursuing his passion for sculpting for full time, Tapas worked as a modeller and headed the studio at Indian Museum in Kolkata. Tapas has received various awards and scholarships including M. P State Lalit Kala Academy, Governor’s Gold Medal, Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, Rabindra Bharti University, Ministry of Culture’s Senior Fellowship. He has executed over 30 installations between 10’ and 55’ high at various places including NTPC, SAIL, and IFFCO along with many State and Government organisations.
