Thota Vaikuntam is an acclaimed Indian artist, who comes from a very humble background. He was born in 1942, in Burugupalli, in the Karimnagar district of Telangana (then Andra Pradesh), where his father ran a grocery shop. He pursued his education at the College of Fine Arts and Architecture, Hyderabad, and further studied Painting and Printmaking at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, on an Andra Pradesh Lalit Kala Akademi Fellowship. Here he was trained under the guidance of the noted artist K. G. Subramanyan.

Vaikuntam captures the daily lives of villagers in Telangana. He paints his subjects — almond-eyed men and women from his village working in the paddy fields, carrying toddy pots on their shoulders, and running their daily errands, such as visiting temples, chatting with the neighbors, fetching water at the local well, etc.

Thota’s color palette comprises rich and vivid tones of primary colors. He does not like using composite colors, because he finds them unnatural. These colors also reflect the preferred brightly colored clothes of the people in rural Telangana. His subjects, often the women in his hometown are seen draped in vibrant-colored sarees, hair tied in a bun, numerous bangles, a huge red bindi on a turmeric-smothered forehead, and a stunning nose ring. Unlike the women figures of other artists, who are delicate, beautiful, and attractive, Thota’s subjects are stocky, muscular, and grotesque. The artist thinks, that the women in his hometown may not be beautiful, but they are charming and spontaneous. He finds them warm, courteous, and robust, who are extremely hardworking, strong, and confident. They are mostly middle-aged women who carry a powerful matriarchal position, a feature quite common across the entire Southern India. The men folk in his paintings have a huge tilak on their forehead, a thick and bushy mustache, and are dressed in traditional attire. These men are often seen playing a musical instrument or engaged in a conversation with the women in the paintings.
