‘Dancing Peacocks’, is based on a traditional Indian art form called Pichwai paintings. Pichwai is an intricate and detailed artwork, that revolves around the excerpts from Lord Krishna’s life. Traditionally, these paintings that are rich in cultural and mythological elements, are painted by priests on the walls of Sreenathji Temple. ‘Dancing Peacocks’, is an ode to Lord Krishna’s favourite bird; peacock, where the artist has painted blue and golden peacocks on a beautiful red background. Sushil Soni who is a renowned Pichwai artist combines the traditional art form with modern mediums and techniques. However, the experiments in his work, do not deviate his art from customary paintings, his paintings are still vivid, vibrant and detailed. Much like any other Pichwai paintings, Soni’s artwork is a captivating combination of bright tones of red, blue, greens, etc.

Sushil Soni is well renowned Pichwai artist from Nathdwara, Rajasthan. He has undergone training in Pichwai since a young age under his father’s expertise and also holds a degree in Drawing and Painting from Nathdwara College.

Pichwai paintings are painted by the priests of Sreenathji Temple in Nathdwara, Rajasthan. The creations are picturesque of excerpts from the life of Lord Krishna, who is worshipped in Hinduism. The paintings are made with religious fervor and devotion and are rich in cultural and mythological elements. They are treated as a form offering to the Lord and are seen adorning the walls of the Sreenathji Temple. A tradition conventionally passed down the lineage of priests of Nathdwara; it has now become a genre explored by many others.

These paintings are highly intricate and vibrant in composition. Sunil Soni is known to deviate from the traditional pichwai style by experimenting with various mediums and techniques. Extreme detailing within the paintings is a signature style. The paintings are vivid and contain bright hues such as reds, blues and greens. Blue in particular is associated with Lord Krishna and therefore holds prominence in most paintings. The paintings render an aura of serene devoutness.

His work has been a part of a number of exhibitions nationwide. He has also been associated with various art workshops and camps in the country. He has won numerous state level competitions and has also been honored by the Government of Rajasthan for his work. He currently resides in Rajasthan and works from there.
