Pray, dream, or rejoice old memories, you will find your eyes closed. Closing the eyes take you a step closer to what you are thinking, to what you want. ‘Divine Thought 2’ is a painting about a woman praying to Goddess Durga, the Goddess of strength and endeavour, also known as Shakti. Though both the subjects, Durga and the woman are on the same bright red backdrop, they have contrasting colours. However, neither of the subjects are monochromatic. The woman, experiencing her tranquillity, is gradually acquiring the colour of her Goddess by praying to the divinity of Shakti and the Goddess is also absorbing Her worshipper’s skin tone. The colours are connecting the two women, similar to how divine thoughts connect us to the Almighty. A palette full of subdued shades, colour Deepa Hekre’s artwork. She makes intricate motifs such as flowers, (especially lotus and tulips) butterflies, leaves, etc. with diverging colours to her textured background and creates an interesting base for her subjects. Often, one can also observe mythological symbols such as Om, Trishul or ancients scripts and writings as motifs in her paintings. Onlookers can experience nothing but serenity and divinity by looking at Hekre’s art.

Deepa Hekre is a teacher turned artist. She specializes in figurative art, and she showcases women in all their glory through her work. She gives credit to her time in Nashik, which spurred the development of the figurative style in her paintings. Deepa graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts from the L.S. Raheja School of Art in 1999 and pursued further studies in art at Sindhudurg Kalamahavidyalaya in Kankavli. Post her studies she conducted private lessons, and she began doing shows only recently (2016).

She believes her canvas to be a woven cloth and her drawings to be shown as if painted on the woven fabric. She uses vivid colors and uses acrylic on canvas applied with rollers as her paintbrushes. In every one of her artworks, the woman is in the foreground be it the ‘Women I,’ ‘Flowers’ or ‘Enlightenment’ series. In a recent article in Times of India, she says Use of Natural colors including red, blue, yellow, white and black is the main feature of my paintings.”

Deepa is an emerging artist who has started out strong. Her artworks have been generating a lot of reviews and coverage. Deepa lives and works from Nashik, Maharashtra.
