Banaras, Varanasi, or Kashi, three different names of one holy city. A city where a pilgrim can attain the final goal of human life; moksha. Moksha means severing all the ties with the material world, from the cycle of life, death and rebirth, or in a more psychological sense, liberation from ignorance: self-realisation and self-knowledge. The place where a soul leaves his/her body behind and unites with the Almighty. Perhaps, this is what Somnath Bothe is emphasising in this picturesque painting. The mesmerising silhouette of the city, on the ghats of the holy River Ganga, that meets the grey-blue skies at the horizon. Just like it’s difficult to differentiate where the ghat ends and the skies begin at the horizon, it’s difficult to draw a line where the human behaviour and spirituality unite in Banaras. With his single colour scheme, detailing with charcoal that adds depth to the painting, and a splash of colour here and there, Bothe paints a breathtaking painting of the holiest city in India, which almost seems alive.

Born and raised in a small village called Paithan (1982) in Aurangabad Maharashtra, Somnath Bothe, was fortunate to pursue his passion in art, after his Diploma in Art Education from Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya (2006-2007). Prior to that, he had completed Diploma in Painting (First Class) Merit of Mumbai Board, Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya (2002-2006) Pune. He is also a recipient of a Gold medal from the Royal Academy, National Level, Gulbarga Karnataka.

Somnath works with different mediums- sometimes charcoal, mixed media and even acrylic. His work is inspired by timeless locations such as Benaras, Lord Ganesha, and iconic locations in the British Raj era. He has drawn beautiful paintings in different colors paired with black. Yellows, reds, blues are telling of the time of the day, and long towers, running tongas with umbrellas and gateways in different cities. He has drawn Kolkata, Mumbai – taking key historical architecture or city elements and putting them down on the canvas in a unique way, representative of his signature styles.

Somnath has managed to create a place of his own in the world of art. Powering through, he has been putting up shows and catching the eyeballs of curators. His paintings can transport you into history, where long ago, life looked simple and was full of colors.
