Basuki Dasgupta believes that the concept of ‘Durga-Mahishasura’ is not merely a part of mythology, but is very much a concept of ‘today’. It is an expression of the faith, of the triumph of good over evil. Durga, the modern day representation of compassion, truth and magnanimity, the interplay of texture on the rough surface of canvas ground reflects the present day’s complexity of human relationships, that could be so simple and easy, yet is an effort for the fear of losing and of letting go. The painting ‘Lady Of The Forest’ is a personification of the forest in the form of Goddess Durga. Dasgupta uses mixed media to create a unique texture on the canvas which also adds a dimension to his art. His art mostly revolves around Goddess Durga. He gives special attention to the features such as the prominent red bindi on Her forehead, beautiful eyes, nose rings, etc. Much like his paintings, the artist’s palette is full of dark and vibrant shades of reds, greens, blues highlighted by black and white.

His childhood was highly fabricated by the poetic tenderness of a terracotta temple. He communicated his inner emotions of joys and frustrations, love and loneliness with the rhythm of terracotta, and the mysterious patterns of temple architecture. His childhood memories resonate with the sounds of solitude, broken every now and then with the squeaks of squirrels and screeches of bats.

He is from Bishnupur, West Bengal, a town renowned for its Terracotta temples. He completed his Fine Arts degree in the year 1992 and started his first lesson on mural painting from K.G.Subhramanyan. He believes art has the spiritual dimension that can help one to transcend this ‘wall’ between man and nature- man and god.
