G Subramanian is one of the most celebrated artists in India. His work is a representation of India in the world of Modern Art. One look at Michelangelo's work at the Sistine Chapel led him to become an artist. He graduated first class, ranked first, from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kumbakonam in 1974. Subramanian has been honored with numerous awards- noteworthy among them are Tamil Nadu State Lalit Kala Akademi Award (1998), AIFACS Award, All India Fine Arts & Crafts Society, New Delhi (2000) and Saudia 6th Malwan GCC Countries Biennale Award (2003).
His work is the pride of art collectors all around the world and is housed in collections of countries such as USA, France, UK, Canada, Lebanon, Austria, and Saudi Arabia. In India, his work is housed with, Kinfotech Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore, Ministry of Defense, New Delhi, Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation, Karnataka Lalitkala, Government Archaeological Museum, Bangalore, Bharatha Kala Parishad, Hyderabad and Alliance Francaise, Bangalore.
Subramanian’s work is mostly in mixed media and his collages on canvas are inspired by the costumes that his father would wear as a theatre artist. Subramanian is ruled by his emotions and through his art he wants the audience to not only see but also feel his art. He has portrayed Krishna, Buddha, Ganesha and other mythological figures in his work. He uses various techniques, (such as calligraphy), abstract backgrounds, Indian myth and tradition to bring his collages to life.
