Nefelibata' - a beautiful Portuguese word It means "cloud walker" ; one who lives in the clouds of their own imagination and dreams. An unconventional person. Ever since I can remember, my biggest dream was to see the world. As a child, I had this calendar with pictures of beautiful places in the world that I would flip over and over again and lose myself in. Coming from a very simple family, there was no chance really that I would see those places someday.
But as Paulo Coelho said, When you want something, all the Universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. Extremely fortunately for me, I got to live my dream, while still just a teenager, with my first job, that took me to places far and wide around the world and that calendar came alive before my very eyes.
I must say thankyou to my parents who recognized the opportunity I had been given, and let me fly the nest at a young age, against much popular advice. It takes a strong heart to do that.
Since that dream, I've fearlessly followed many dreams and the universe has been my partner in crime. Eternally grateful I am.
Many a times in life, there will be people who will tell you that you can't do something.
To stop building 'castles in the sky'. 'get your head out of the clouds'. In other words, you can't be a Nefelibata. Welcome it ! Let it motivate you even more to make it happen. I say, go ahead, and build your castles in the sky. Build them as big and as tall as you will. And fearlessly and untiringly work towards them.. Walk towards them. And the Universe will join hands with you.
One of my biggest dreams even today is to see more of the world. One lifetime is too little for it. Why the little dog in this peice? Because my dog, Sailee, is my travel partner now ( she's the bestest) as we take off on adventures together.
I also have one more dream.. or hope really.. That people really connect with the stories each peice of my artwork has to tell. That to me would mean success. Do you have a castle in the sky?
By the artist:-
As an artist, I am a storyteller.
I am drawn to shapes and structure but also the freedom of fluidity. One represents security and organisation and the other unrestricted freedom and flow. I want both, and as a mixed media and collage artist, I have finally found a style that marries them well.
While my educational background comprises English Literature, Psychology and Mass Media, my love affair with art started serendipitously only a little over two years ago, and having explored many different mediums and techniques, I have now found a style that truly resonates with me.
My love for collage is perhaps also influenced by my childhood obsession with jigsaw puzzles. Being a self taught artist and having spent hours and days and years now, trying to teach myself about something I enjoy so much, has taught me that, art is as much about restraint and confidence, as it is about flourish and expression. I yearn to achieve a balance between the two.
My inspiration: My work is greatly influenced by beautiful writing (sometimes even just a single word), and the words or thoughts that inspired the painting, accompany the painting often. My favourite techniques: Monoprinting and collage
My process: I enjoy creating my own collage papers and then combining them with mixed media. Many a times I create the papers and simply tear them up or cut them, and then within those pieces, sometimes ideas and inspiration appear. I then put back those pieces to create the story.
My art philosophy : as Andy Warhol said,” Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.”
