A state of disorientation where one is unsure of what to choose is a puzzled state. The thoughtful use of Rubik’s cube in the painting is a beautiful metaphor to the title; ‘Puzzled’. Kamal Mitra, quite interestingly, has narrated the feelings, a person in a puzzled state goes through, in this painting. His/her mind, just like an unsolved Rubik’s cube, is going in all directions, different parts of the same person, want and choose different things. The two pairs of hands, one clear, other a little shadowy, perfectly show the confused state of mind. However, one can see how the hands are trying to take control of the Rubik’s cube, trying to hold it tight, trying to solve it, similar to how a puzzled person tries to control his mind and his thoughts, tries to get hold of his condition. Renowned for his realistic art, Kamal Mitra illustrates human beings and human body parts conveying multiple complex emotions. Mitra uses a variety of brush strokes, different colour shades and adds various textures to his paintings. He typically uses drab tones of acrylic colours and charcoal. Mitra’s brushwork is sharp and well defined, his human forms are extremely realistic and very captivating.

Kamal Mitra hailing from West Bengal. He obtained his Bachelors’ from Government College of Art and Masters’ from Kala Bhavana Visva Bharati Santiniketan.

Kamal Mitra’s work is deeply riveting. Catergorised as realistic abstracts his work portrays humans or human body parts displaying complex emotions; emotions which are highly touching and stirring in nature. His work has a melancholic tone to it, due to his use of stroke, hues and textures. His paintings feature grasping or clenching of hands which symbolise strength and convictions amidst agony that transcend from the artist's inner afflictions. His human forms exhibit somber expressions, conveying emotions of pain and turmoil.

His predominantly used media are charcoal and acrylic. His colour palette consists of sober hues. His strokes are well defined and sharp. His human forms are extremely realistic and highly engaging.

He has numerous shows and exhibitions to his credit. He currently resides in Kolkata and works as a freelance artist.
