Born in 1949, JM Subramani, widely known as JMS Mani, is a renowned Indian artist. He received his diploma in Drawing and Painting from Ken School of Art, Banglore. This is where Mani met his guru, his inspiration, and found his true love for art in the form of RM Hadapad, the school’s founder and his teacher. Mani was deeply influenced by his guru; RM Hadpad’s hometown; Badami and its residents.
JMS Mani, was fascinated by the simplicity and deeply grounded nature of the people of Badami. Through his paintings, he immortalises their unpretentious and hard working lives. His subjects don’t have distinct features, perhaps because Mani does not want to portray a particular person, but the entire Badami civilization. The artist believes that anyone who sees his paintings, can imagine their face on the painting and try to find a common ground with his subjects. He uses dark and dusky colors for his subject’s complexions. However, his faceless portraits are adorned in traditional vibrant attire, white dhoti and colorful turban for men, long skirts, sarees, and plaited hair decorated with flowers, for women.
JMS Mani had been awarded the prestigious Lalit Kala Akademi Awards from 1981 to 1983. He has exhibited his works are numerous Indian and international shows including Chitra Kala Parishath, Bengaluru, Bharat Bhawan International Biennale of Prints, Switzerland Graphics, etc.
