Born and brought up in a three century old ancestral home in Kolkata, Gautam’s art evolved while painting and decorating the pedals of annual festival of Druga Pooja.
Gautam Mukherjee is renowned to explore the relationship between two people, through his paintings. His subjects; men, women and children, in traditional Indian attire, are usually seen interacting with each other, physically and emotionally. The physical distance between two people, convey a lot about them and their relationship with each other, in Gautam’s paintings. His art is adorned by the vintage versions of simple daily life objects, such as telephones, notebooks, mirrors etc. Even though, they are set in the modern era, Gautam’s paintings seem to have a fascinating history attached to them.
To a large extent, his exploration of relationships and antique houses is based on the fact that he grew up in his ancestral home, where is family still lives together. His paintings illustrate the deep rooted philosophy of his family’s love and bonding, spread across generations, spent over the years.
