Buwa Shete (b. 1960) graduated in Applied Arts from the prestigious Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune in 1983. After graduation, Buwa started working at advertising agencies as an illustrator and creative director for many years, and fuel his passion by concurrently continuing to paint.
His works were influenced by the socioeconomic events of the 1980s such as political upheaval, global capitalism, global mass media notable wealth discrepancy and distinctive music such as hip hop and electronic pop music, fashion, etc. His paintings revolve around family life and are dedicated to the unconditional love and sacrifices parents make for their children. Buwa chooses a combination of bright red, earth toned brown, taupe, and different shades of white, to paint his well balanced stylized portraits.
Buwa won an award at the National Exhibition of Young Painters, in Kolkata, organized by the legendary Indian artist, M. F. Hussain. In 1997, he also won the London Advertising Award, for his paintings for a calendar on Philosophy by Various Saints. He has exhibited his works in numerous group and solo shows in New Delhi, Mumbai, Dubai, and many other cities across the world. His paintings are part of many recognized collections including; Swastik Batteries, Theramax, ICIL, IKEA, along with many private collections in Pune, Mumbai, New Delhi, and New York.
