Jayita found her muse in women drinking tea. She portrays the simple and down to earth life of women everywhere. In a subtle way, her paintings depict how the life of woman, in a big metropolis such as Kolkata is no different from that in a small village. After toiling hard in the homes and kitchen, these women gather around in late afternoon, on their roof along with tea. They enjoy this tea with a little bit of sugar and handful of gossips. The expressions on these women’s faces are priceless and resemble those of someone who is deeply engrossed in listening a thrilling story. If you listen closely, you might even hear them talking.

Born in 1967, Jayita Borthakur grew up in the metro city of Kolkata. She earned her graduation in Bachelors of Art from Calcutta University, where she studied Fine Arts at College of Visual Arts. She has also studied photography at Photographic Association of India.

Jayita’s paintings bring the mild whiffs of a relaxed evening in Kolkata. Having spent most of her life in the city, Jayita is well versed with the lifestyle of Bengali women. Along with chitchatting on their roofs, one can also see that these women efficiently handling their households by drying spices and making pickles on the roof. She likes to portray them hanging out with their friends, over tea on one of the roofs, having the time of their lives. She creates fascinating motifs on these women’s clothes that resonate with the Bengali lifestyle. Jayita’s paintings are as refreshing and joyful as a cup of evening tea with friends.

She has conducted numerous group and solo exhibitions in India and internationally.
