Numerous shades of yellow and orange, accompanied by the well defined, flat brushwork give a collage-like effect to this painting. On this straight-edged, collage setting, the artist paints his subjects with lighter tones of the same yellow and orange, highlighting some facial features with red and blue. While the subjects’ closed eyes—that perhaps depict their reflection on their own self—give a soothing effect to the painting, the artist’s distinguished strokes give an illusion of multiple layers to the artwork.

Looking at the famed abstract figurative artist Jagannath Paul’s work you will think that he has managed to capture an intimate scene at the right time, or has painted the subjects, ‘ at the moment.’ He has been working with paint and charcoal for nearly two decades now commanding a mastery and finesse that very few can claim. An article in The Economic Times called him one of the first artists to use charcoal on canvas. It is an achievement as charcoal does not stick to the canvas quickly, and Jagannath has to rub it in with his fingertips. He has managed to mix paint and charcoal— an unusual combination to create incredible masterpieces.

Its no wonder then, that Jagannath has been a recipient of prestigious awards such as College Award for the Best Pencil Study (1995-96), Academy Award from the Academy of Fine Arts (1996), Gopen Roy Award from the Indian Society of Oriental Arts (1996), among many others. He graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata with a first class, 1st, in the year 2000.

His large canvases are an outpouring of desire and love between lovers. The beauty of the canvas is the intensity with which the figures convey their passion- it is raw, unhindered and true. Only a Master can genuinely render such an image on the canvas.

Jagannath Paul hails from West Bengal, and currently resides in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
