Havelis, the big mansions, were a significant part of bygone Indian lifestyle and Bollywood movies. This shades of blue painting of a building, with just a hint of scattered colours,  takes us back to the era where havelis were prestigious and belonged only to the richest people in the town. Even though the structure of the building looks a bit modern, the monochromatic colours give it a medieval touch. Suresh Gulage has skilfully used blue, white and everything in between to highlight the characteristics of this painting. One can observe the intricate details that represent the doors and windows along with the ornate motifs on the walls of the haveli. Suresh Gulage’s art revolves around architectural landscapes. He believes that buildings hold city life and witness everything happening around them, day and night. They possess the ideas and imagination that Gulage portrays in his paintings. With his spellbinding brushwork and vivacious colour shades, the artist paints cityscapes highlighting the beauty of buildings. His artwork is full of techniques that are both subtle and suggestive.

Suresh Gulage has a G.D. in Painting (2004) and Diploma in Art Education (2005) from Abhinav Mahavidyalaya, Pune. In his five years of intense study of art Suresh developed and polished his artistic expression and the master now presents to the world his unique take on villages and buildings. Colorful elongated structures closely placed together, reflect light differently during the day. He is passionate about capturing how uniquely the light highlights different portions of the building as the sun moves in the sky. Interestingly, his work borders between lifelike representation and a sophisticated caricature.

Suresh shows us with his unique colors, how his village looks in a moonless night or when the sun may have just set over the horizon. The title of each of his paintings guides the audience to what the artist wants to show to them. This colorful visual map takes you to little windows, darkened staircases, to show us what the artist means by ‘Reflection’ and ‘Alone’. His recent set of work titled Cityscapes was well received and critically acclaimed.

His chosen medium for expression is acrylic on canvas. Suresh has participated in numerous competitions, solo and group exhibitions since 2003. He has been a recipient of V.V. Oak Award (Pune), 2008. Suresh has also received awards from Sai Chitrakala Mahavidyalaya (Pune), 2004, Nashik Kala Niketan and Chitari Academy in 2003. His work is a part of the art collection at NDA, Pune, and private collections of individuals who are based out of India and abroad.
