Biswas is known for his interesting fusion style in artistry where he juxtaposes religious and spiritual representatives with innately man made contrivances. While the little Ganesha is cozying in a resting posture, with his babyish appearance and his rosy pigment attracting the first glance of a viewer; the gaze soon shifts to a mechanical appendage that nestles the divine infant. The machinery appears to be a scoop of a crane and the contrasts in the painting immediately catches one’s attention. Work in Progress can drive a person into ruminations, and is of course open to varied interpretations- a characteristic of artistic creations that gives unbound liberty to run one’s imaginations.

‘Serene,’ ‘meditative,’ ‘peaceful,’ are the words, that these paintings by Jiban Biswas, evoke in the viewer’s mind. Jiban has successfully been able to bring a sense of calm amidst the chaos in the world around us. The images he paints, are merely that of a cow, a face, some swans, great texture on the canvas, calming reds (yes, he has managed to do that!) and vivid blues. His drawings are lifelike, the facial expression very aptly portraying meditation- these usual scenes of a village take on a different quality on Jiban’s canvas.

He insists that he has not been able to forget his childhood memories and the paintings are a reflection of that time. Born and brought up in Birbhum, he was able to pursue his art degree from the oldest college in India, College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata and has been a recipient of the Ravi Jain Memorial Scholarship (2003). After his graduation, he did not look back.

Since his graduation, he has participated in over 40 exhibitions and can congratulate himself of having art connoisseurs create a collection of his work in France, Germany, England among many others countries. He is considered as a talented artist among his contemporaries and one to watch out for as he brings to the world his creations.
