About Bhuri Bai

Padma Shri Bhuri Bai is one of the most celebrated contemporary tribal artists from India and a pioneering figure in the evolution of indigenous painting traditions onto paper and canvas. Belonging to the Bhil community of Madhya Pradesh, she was among the first artists to translate the community’s ritual wall paintings into a contemporary artistic practice.

Her works are distinguished by vibrant colors, intricate dotted patterns, and stylized depictions of animals, birds, and forest life, reflecting the deep relationship between the Bhil people and the natural world. The dots, a defining element of Bhil painting, symbolize seeds, life, and the generative energy of nature.

Through her practice, Bhuri Bai has played a significant role in bringing tribal art into the sphere of contemporary Indian art, while preserving the storytelling, symbolism, and spiritual connection to nature embedded in Bhil visual culture. In recognition of her contribution to Indian art and heritage, she was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors.
