Achutan Ramachandran Nair, popularly known as A. Ramachandran, is a prominent Indian artist and sculptor, who was born in Kerala, in 1935. He pursued his bachelor’s degree in Malayalam Literature from Kerala University, followed by receiving Diploma in Fine Arts and Crafts from Kala Bhavan, Visva Bharti University at Santiniketan. Growing up in Kerala, the socio-political environment played a major influence on Ramachandran’s early works. He portrayed the oppression, violence and war, the social and political struggle of his home state, in a modernist way. The subjects; human figures, of most of his early paintings were segmented or disfigured and most of them were headless. Later in his life, traditional Indian art form, especially the vivid Rajashthani culture and their paintings in Nathadwara and miniature art form impacted his works. The murals in Kerala and Ajanta also played a major influence on his works. Ramachandran also admired the works of preeminent Indian artist Nandlal Bose. Gradually, he started incorporating the motifs and classical imagery from Indian art forms into his works. Rather than completely focusing on these motifs, the artist integrated this imagery into his paintings as a part of his subject’s clothes, jewellery, surroundings, etc.
Ramachandran says that his painting, ‘Yayati’ played a pivotal role in his career as an artist. He could integrate the elements of conventional Indian art form, with mythological imagery in a contemporary form. Later he started exploring his male and female subjects in a sensuous setting and gradually moved towards celebrating life and nature in its various forms. Over his career, Ramachandran has exhibited his works in prestigious galleries such as Grosvenor Vadehra, London, Guild Art Gallery, Mumbai and New York. Art galleries have conducted his retrospective exhibitions in 2004 by Vadehra Art Gallery, in 2003 by National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), New Delhi, and in 1983 by Kumar Gallery at Art Heritage, New Delhi and Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. Among many others, Ramachandran has also participated in various group shows, such as ‘Progressive to Altermodern’ at Grosvenor Gallery, London, (2009), ‘From Everyday to the Imagined: Modern Indian Art’ at Singapore Art Museum, Singapore ad the Museum of Art, Seoul (2007-08) the ‘Festival of India’ at Coups de Coeur, Geneva (1987), the Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil (1979), the Menton Biennale, France (19740 and the New Delhi Triennale, India (1968). In the year 2005, the Government of India honoured Ramachandra by awarding him the prestigious Padma Bhushan. In 2003, he received the eminent Raja Ravi Verma Puraskar from the Government of Kerala. He was elected as a Fellow of the renowned Lalit Kala Akademi in 2002 and in 2013, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, granted him an honorary doctorate.
