Sayed Haider Raza, commonly known as S.H. Raza, was born in 1922 and raised in the village of Babaria, in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh. His formative years amidst the verdant landscape of lush green trees and scenic mountains deeply influenced his artistic sensibilities, finding expression on his canvases later in life. Raza obtained his arts diploma from the esteemed J.J. School of Arts in 1947.
During his time at J.J. School of Arts, he worked at a clockmaker’s design studio in South Bombay. The vibrant atmosphere and fast-paced life of this area inspired him to explore watercolours in his art. Raza was a co-founder of the progressive Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group (PAG), alongside F.N. Souza and K.H. Ara. The PAG aimed to diminish the dominance of European realism in Indian art, challenging the curriculum of Indian Art Schools which heavily favoured European realism at the time.
Raza, a prominent Indian artist, delved deeply into geometric abstraction intertwined with Indian spirituality. His signature works, renowned for their vivid hues and striking forms, frequently incorporate the bindu—a symbol emblematic of creation and the cosmos in Hindu philosophy. Raza's art transcends geographical boundaries, earning him international acclaim and a plethora of awards, solidifying his position as one of India's foremost modern artists.
Throughout his illustrious career, S.H. Raza garnered numerous accolades. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1981 and the Padma Bhushan in 2007, acknowledging his significant contributions to the arts. Additionally, he received the prestigious Prix de la Critique award in France in 1956 and was bestowed with the Knight of the Legion of Honour, one of France's highest civilian honours, in 2015. Raza's artistic odyssey was characterised by a profound exploration of Indian spirituality and culture, garnering widespread acclaim both domestically and abroad.

We are leveraging blockchain to ensure that every art bought from Eikowa can never be forged such that it remains truly unique, just like when you bought it. We do this by having a clear link between a digital certificate that cannot be copied and linking this to your physical art.
While we are the first gallery in India to launch this, and our solution is unique internationally, we think as the world begins to realize real-utility use cases of blockchain, our solution will become the golden standard for provenance and authenticity.
