Born in 1981 in Hanoi, Vietnam, Phan Thu Trang, started painting at the age of 5. Phan studied at the Hanoi Theater and Cinema University and is a member of The Vietnam Young Painter Association. Deeply inspired by the cities and villages of Northern Vietnam, Phan captures their breathtaking beauty in her paintings.

Artists often have a defined line whether they paint cityscapes or landscapes, with her luscious recreations of the Vietnamese countryside, Phan plays on the definite line and blurs it a little. Her work is filled with life and with life and fills the onlooker’s heart with hope and joy. Each of her paintings has a set theme and a color scheme, often illustrating a season or a particular time of the day. With a finite color palette, the artist starts painting her beautiful landscapes and adorns them with thick strokes and different textures. She breaks down the complexities of nature to its bare essentials. At the heart of each painting, is a huge tree with bushy leaves and spindly bark.

Phan uses thick luscious strokes to paint her cheerfully bushy trees. She uses light and deep tones of a single color and thick short brushwork to paint the foliage. The darker tones add shadows to her trees and depth to her paintings. Depending on what season her paintings are portraying, Phan then paints blossoming flowers or shedding leaves on the ground. Other smaller trees at a distance, blooming grasslands, beautiful doors and windows, and small huts with thatched roofs create settings for these trees. One would also see miniature images of local people cycling or walking in the grassland, in straw hats and light airy clothes. For her background, Phan uses a variety of colours contrasting that to her main subjects, the trees along with a few highlights of vibrant reds, pinks, and oranges.

Phan has exhibited her works in numerous group and solo shows at various international destinations including Singapore, New York, Hong Kong, and Belgium to name a few.
